This report discusses the changing roles of engineers and engineering technologists and the implications of these trends for the respective professions. The report was prepared under the auspices of the Engineering and Technology Labour Market Study.

Engineering and Technology Employer Survey (2007)
Download
This report summarizes the results of a survey of 700 engineering and technology intensive employers on skill requirements, hiring challenges, and attitudes towards continuing professional development and licensure or certification. The report was prepared under the auspices of the Engineering and Technology Labour Market Study.

Engineering and Technology Labour Market Study: Final Report
Downlaod
The Engineering and Technology Labour Market Study was jointly sponsored by Engineers Canada and the Canadian Council of Technicians and Technologists with support from Human Resources and Skills Development Canada. The Study encompassed several themes including: changes in skill trends, the impact of immigration and the integration of internationally educated engineering professionals, changing roles between engineers and engineering technologists, continuing professional development, licensure and certification, and the impact of globalization.

Engineering Work in Canada (2000). Biotechnology, Software Development and Information Technology- Complete Report
Download
This study describes trends in engineering work in three rapidly growing and technology-intensive fields. The study is based on interviews with human resources directors and chief technology officers in 93 companies. The study describes how these industries are re-defining the skill requirements and expectations of professional engineers. Among the themes discussed in the study are: the importance of non-technical skills, the role of engineers as project managers, the blurring of distinctions between engineers and technologists, and the weaker support in these industries for the system of professional licensure in engineering.

Engineering Work in Canada: Sectoral Focus Groups (2001)
Download
This report summarizes the results of focus groups in six sectors: consulting engineering, oil and gas, offshore oil and gas, pulp and paper/forestry, auto and auto parts, and aerospace. The report deals with trends in skill requirements, continuing competence requirements, quality control (ISO), and the overlap between engineers and technologists.

The Import and Export of Engineering Work (2003)
Download
Based on interviews with engineering managers, the report examines both the factors that shape import and export trends and the role of IT as an enabler of increased internationalization in the performance of engineering work.

Integration and Licensure of Internationally Trained Architectural Graduates (2007)
Download
The report summarizes the results of focus groups, interviews and surveys of employers and internationally trained architects on the challenges of integrating into the Canadian profession. The report was commissioned by the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada and the Canadian Architectural Certification Board.

Licensing Foreign-Educated Professionals (2003)
Download
This report examines the policies and processes for licensing foreign educated professionals in Canada in 10 professions, including five health professions and law, architecture, accounting, actuarial practice, and veterinary medicine. The report also reviews licensing policies for engineers in the UK, Australia, South Africa, and three American states.

Survey of Engineers and Engineering Technicians and Technologists (2008)
Download
Summarizes the results of a survey of 15,585 persons working or qualified in engineering or technology. Among the topics discussed are: educational qualifications, obstacles confronting internationally educated professionals, attitudes towards licensure and certification, and trends in continuing professional development. The report was prepared under the auspices of the Engineering and Technology Labour Market Study www.etlms.engineerscanada.ca

Trends in Continuing Professional Development of Engineers and Engineering Technicians and Technologists (2009)
Download
Based on survey data and interviews, this report examines trends and issues in continuing professional development for engineers and for engineering technicians and technologists. The report was prepared under the auspices of the Engineering and Technology Labour Market Study.

Trends in Engineering Work: Results of an Internet-based Survey of Engineering Technicians and Technologists (1999)
Download
This report summarizes the results of a survey of 1,300 engineering technicians and technologists. The survey analyzed trends in demographics, skill requirements and the allocation of responsibilities within engineering teams. An important factor changing skill requirements is the increased role of technical software to perform engineering calculations. This has led to increased responsibilities for engineering technicians and technologists. In light of the increased importance of statistical process control systems in quality management, it is noteworthy that around a third of technicians and technologists have no formal training in statistics and probability theory.

Trends in Licensure and Certification of Engineers and Engineering Technicians and Technologists (2009)
Download
Based on survey data and interviews, this report examines trends licensure for engineers and in certification for engineering technicians and technologists. The report was prepared under the auspices of the Engineering and Technology Labour Market Study.
